The Power of Soaking Prayer: Resting in God's Presence
"But one thing is necessary. Mary has made the right
choice, and it will not be taken away from her.” – Luke 10:42 (CSB)
Let me begin by sharing, the words soaking prayer are not
mentioned in the bible. However, in my
opinion, soaking is a posture we can take as prayer warriors. Merriam Webster
(n.d.), defines soaking as to lie immersed in liquid (such as
water) : become saturated by or as if by immersion. To immerse
ourselves means going deeper. Even Jeremiah
33:3 tells us to Call to me and I will answer you and will tell you great and
hidden things that you have not known. Going deeper! To be able to experience a deepness with the
father we have to take the time, remove the noise and soak in his presence.
What is Soaking Prayer?
Soaking prayer is the practice of resting in God's
presence—slowing down, being still, and allowing the Holy Spirit to minister to
us. Unlike intercessory or petitionary prayer, soaking is not about speaking or
asking but about receiving. It is an intimate time of surrender where we
position ourselves to encounter God's love, hear His voice, and be refreshed in
His presence.
Mary and Martha: A Lesson in Prioritizing God's Presence
In Luke 10:38-42, we find the well-known story of two
sisters, Mary and Martha. When Jesus visits their home, Martha is busy
preparing and serving, while Mary simply sits at Jesus’ feet, listening to Him.
Martha becomes frustrated and asks Jesus to tell Mary to help her. But Jesus
gently corrects Martha, saying:
"Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about
many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion,
which will not be taken away from her." (Luke 10:41-42, ESV)
This passage beautifully illustrates the importance of
soaking in God's presence. Martha was caught up in doing for Jesus, while Mary
chose to be with Jesus. Service is good, but intimacy with Christ is better.
Why is Soaking Prayer Important?
- Deepens
Our Relationship with God
Just as relationships grow through time and presence, our relationship with God flourishes when we simply spend time with Him, free of distractions. - Restores
Our Souls
Life can drain us spiritually, emotionally, and physically. Soaking prayer provides a place of renewal where God fills us with His peace and love. - Allows
Us to Hear God's Voice
In stillness, we can hear the whispers of the Holy Spirit. Soaking prayer helps us quiet our minds so we can discern His guidance. - Strengthens
Our Faith
The more time we spend in God’s presence, the more our faith grows. We become anchored in His love and truth, rather than the noise of the world.
How to Soak in God’s Presence
- Find a
quiet place where you won’t be disturbed.
- Play
soft worship music or sit in silence.
- There
are so many soaking worship music options on YouTube
- Relax
and focus on God’s presence, rather than a list of requests.
- Meditate
on a Scripture or simply rest in Him.
- Allow
the Holy Spirit to speak, minister, and refresh you.
Choosing the "Better Portion"
Like Martha, we often get caught up in doing, but
Jesus invites us to be. He desires intimacy with us more than our
busyness for Him. When we prioritize soaking in His presence, we experience the
deep, transformative love that sustains us through every season of life. Since I learned about soaking, it has changed
my life. I encourage you to include it
in your prayer life.
So today, take a moment to pause. Choose the “one thing”
that truly matters. Sit at His feet, soak in His love, and let His presence
renew you.
