A Song, a Scripture, and a Shield: My Morning with God

Scripture: For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.

Psalm 91:11

One of the things I regularly ask God for in prayer is to begin my day with a song in my heart or a scripture to reflect on. More often than not, He answers—placing a melody on my lips that carries me through the day, reminding me of His goodness and grace. This morning, He brought to mind a powerful gospel classic by Fred Hammond: "Jesus Be a Fence All Around Me." This soul-stirring song is more than just a melody; it's a heartfelt prayer for protection, guidance, and the ever-present nearness of God. Its message holds deep spiritual and metaphorical meaning, especially when viewed through the lens of prayer. Let’s take a closer look at what makes this song so impactful.

Significance of the Song:

  1. Metaphor of a Fence:

    • A fence symbolizes safety, boundary, and protection from harm or evil.

    • In the song, asking Jesus to "be a fence all around me every day" is a plea for divine covering and spiritual defense against life's dangers—both seen and unseen.

  2. Everyday Dependence:

    • The line “every day” emphasizes a daily reliance on Jesus. It reflects the reality that life brings new challenges constantly, and we need God’s help at all times.

  3. Spiritual Warfare:

    • The song resonates with the idea of spiritual battle—where faith in Jesus acts as a shield against temptation, evil, and discouragement.

How to Incorporate It Into Prayer:

  1. As a Declaration of Faith:

    • You can speak or sing the words of the song during prayer as a declaration of trust in Jesus’ protection.

    • Example: “Lord, be a fence around my family today. Guard our hearts, minds, and steps.”

  2. As a Daily Petition:

    • Make it a daily request—much like the Lord's Prayer asks for daily bread.

    • It can be used when you feel vulnerable, anxious, or when stepping into unknown territory.

  3. Praying for Others:

    • You can pray this over loved ones, asking Jesus to be a fence around their health, mind, or purpose.

Role of Prayer in the Song’s Message:

  • Prayer is the means by which the song’s plea is made real. It’s how we communicate that deep desire to be protected and guided.

  • Prayer activates faith—it opens a channel between the believer and Jesus, inviting Him to be that spiritual barrier, guide, and companion.
